Greater Toronto Area has a comprehensive public transportation system which includes long subways, buses and streetcars. Despite GTA's growing population, it is one of the safest and cleanest metropolises in the world.

A couple of years ago, the Clean Roads to Clean Air Program was started by Ontario's Transportation Services' and a number of other government agencies. By conducting numerous studies and tests, along with efficiency criteria, they were able to develop and evaluate various street sweeping and flushing technologies. These technologies which were used to sweep and flush road litter were evaluated on their efficiency to remove fine particulate matters that are toxic substances according to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.

Today, there are so many agencies and organizations that advance and protect the natural and land resources of mother earth. Street sweeping machines improves the look and ambiance of residential and business streets. Keep in mind that by protecting storm drain systems, we protect our wildlife habitats.

The dirt gathered by street sweeping machines is actually clay, decomposed vegetation, dirt, sand and silt. Indeed these materials are relatively harmless. However, these materials can quickly and easily combine with other elements found on roadsides like hydrocarbons from engine oil, vehicle exhaust and trace metal from brake linings of most vehicles.

By having high concentrations of these compounds, they can make their way Ontario's storm drain system and can ultimately kill our wildlife and drinking water systems.

The debris gathered by cleaning machines is brought to a sorting facility where this debris is separated. There are pieces of special shaker equipment that are run by operators who tests and screens the different types of debris.

Most communities use street sweeping machines before and after holidays, parades, events and other major festivities. There are residential areas and urban cities that experience extreme winters and who implements aggressive sweeping blitzes after the snow thaws. Indeed more and more residents consider themselves to be adequately informed about pollution in our environment, however, there are also people who are unaware of the importance of street sweeping, and how it protects the health of humans and wildlife.

People should start researching and understand how important street sweeping machines are. They can start reading articles such as this for them to gain a new appreciation and respect cleaning machines and the important role it plays in saving our health and our resources
